Manchester United signed Raphael Varane from Real Madrid last summer in order to bolster their defensive department. A World Cup winner and multiple time Champions League winner, it was seen as a major coup on the part of the Red Devils. However, the signing of the former Los Blancos defender is yet to produce the results that were hoped for, with injuries and a lack of form stopping the Frenchman from making a big impact at Old Trafford.

Furthermore, the futures of Eric Bailly and Phil Jones at Manchester United are up in the air. Both defenders were linked with moves away from Old Trafford in the January transfer window.

While both Jones and Bailly have time left on their contracts, their futures with Manchester United are uncertain and rumours suggest that the club are looking for another centre-back.

There have also been suggestions that Manchester United were interested in signing Bayern Munich’s Niklas Sule next summer, with the German international’s contract with the Bundesliga champions running out then. But it looks like that won’t happen.

Borussia Dortmund confirmed that Sule will join them next summer as they tweeted out:

Other than Manchester United, the likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Newcastle United were also believed to be keeping a keen eye on the central defender.

The German international has experienced a successful career with Bayern Munich, winning every possible trophy since joining the club in 2017 from 1899 Hoffenheim.

Hence, it is a massive blow to Manchester United’s transfer hopes. His addition could have benefited the club without any doubt. On top of his incredible experience of winning, which the Red Devils need at the moment, he is also just 26 years of age and just entering his prime years as a footballer. One can only wonder what could have been.
