The Manchester United defence has been far from convincing this season. The Red Devils signed Raphael Varane in the summer from Real Madrid and must have been hoping that he would solve their problems at the back. But that has not been the case till now. Only West Ham United and Leicester City have conceded more goals than them in the Premier League top ten right now.

This clearly indicates that Manchester United need more reinforcements in defence. And unsurprisingly, the club continue to be linked with several defenders.

Over the past month or so, one player that they have been heavily linked with is Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo. With the Uruguayan’s current deal with the La Liga giants set to run out in the summer of 2023, Manchester United could potentially have a chance to sign him next summer.

As reported by Marca, Manchester United are willing to make a big offer for Araujo, who is yet to agree a contract extension with Barcelona.

Following the conclusion of the January transfer window, the Barcelona management could move their focus towards extending the contracts of the players who do not have a lot of time left on their current deals.

Talks between Araujo and Barcelona over a contract extension are believed to have been going on for a while now although things are rumoured to have stalled.

The Uruguayan has impressed since breaking into the Barcelona first-team and has impressed on both sides of the pitch. Thus, while Manchester United might have signed Varane last summer, a player like Araujo would undoubtedly be a brilliant addition to the club’s squad as well.

Barcelona are believed to be very interested in extending Araujo’s contract but if things don’t change, they might be willing to let him go next summer in order to avoid another Ousmane Dembele situation.
