Roy Keane was an incredible player as well as captain for Manchester United, guiding them to a lot of trophies during his glittering career. He did not enjoy nearly as much success as a manager though. It has been over a decade since he was last in the managerial hot seat at a club – Ipswich Town in 2011. But the Irish legend could potentially be set to make a comeback in the near future.
It is easy to forget but Keane had enjoyed a tremendous start to life as a manager. The Manchester United legend had been appointed by Sunderland in the 2006/07 campaign and guided the team to the Championship title and promotion to the Premier League in the same season.
He would ultimately leave the club in 2008 and had a stint at Ipswich Town, which was not very successful. Since then, he has had spells as assistant manager with the Republic of Ireland national team as well as clubs like Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa, and worked as a pundit.
But as reported by the Daily Mail, Sunderland will interview Keane for their vacant managerial position in what could potentially be an incredible return to the club.
Manchester United legend could make a stunning return to management
It is not the first time that Keane has been rumoured with a return to management in recent times. The Manchester United legend was linked with the vacant job at Celtic last summer but the Scottish club ultimately ended up appointing Ange Postecoglou.
Now, it remains to be seen whether the links to Sunderland ultimately end up leading to something more fruitful for Keane.
Sunderland have gone through some tough times in recent years. After staying in the Premier League for a decade straight, the club have slipped down to League One and will surely be hoping to climb up the English footballing pyramid once again.
