Edinson Cavani was one of the names heavily linked with a move away from Manchester United ahead of the January transfer window, with clubs like Barcelona and Juventus being linked with the striker. But very soon it emerged that the Uruguayan international would remain at Old Trafford till the end of the season, despite the fact that several other players left the club on loan last month.
Manchester United signed Cavani in the 2020 summer transfer window as a free agent after Paris Saint-Germain had allowed him to leave. Despite his outstanding record though, doubts were raised about the move.
However, after a slow start to life in the Premier League, Cavani came into his own in the second half of the season and ended up enjoying a very good campaign overall.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, in the 2020/21 season, the Uruguayan ended up scoring 17 goals and providing 6 assists in 39 appearances across all competitions. Thus, once believed to be on his way out of the club, Cavani ended up signing a one-year contract extension with Manchester United.
Manchester United receive Cavani future update
While rumours continue to surround Cavani and his future, it looks nothing is sorted yet. As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, the Uruguayan accepted staying at Manchester United until the end of the season and he will decide his future in May. La Liga appears to be a serious option.
Although various injuries, a lack of form and the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo have all had an effect on Cavani’s season, he has shown no lack of commitment when on the pitch for Manchester United and continues to be an important part of this team.
And he could end up getting more minutes in the second half of the campaign. It remains to be seen if he can repeat his heroics from last season and go on a brilliant run of form once again.
