When Ralf Rangnick arrived at Manchester United, it was considered as a major coup on the part of the club. The German is a legendary figure in modern football management. He was the one who shaped the system of Gegenpressing and also had a hand in popularising zonal marking. He is believed to have influenced the likes of Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann, just to name a few.

While Rangnick was only brought in as the interim manager till the end of the season, after which he would be given a consultancy role, many believed that the German coach would impress to the point where he would be handed the role on a permanent basis.

If Manchester United’s January transfer window is anything to go by, it looks like they have already made the decision to go after a new long-term manager next summer.

The club did not make a single signing in January, even though they are in the middle of a tough battle to finish in the top four of the Premier League this season and could possibly be set for their fifth straight trophyless campaign.

Manchester United appear to have made Rangnick decision already

Manchester United’s activity does appear to heavily hint at the fact that they are looking to wait for the arrival of a new long-term manager before making any significant additions to their squad.

Of course, things can change very quickly in football, and if Rangnick is able to guide Manchester United to a strong finish in the Premier League or a Champions League triumph, he would probably be handed the managerial role on a permanent basis. But as of now, it feels like the club have other plans for the summer.

Let’s see what the future holds for Manchester United as well as Rangnick.
