Coming into the campaign, Manchester United were expected to challenge for the Premier League title after enjoying a brilliant summer transfer window. The Red Devils had done a tremendous job keeping the core of their squad together, which had finished second last season and as runners up in the Europa League. At the same time, they had added the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane to the mix.

Unfortunately, things did not go as smoothly as expected. After a bright start, the wheels would come off soon and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side slipped out of the top four.

The Norwegian manager was ultimately shown the exit door after a long run of disappointing form. Michael Carrick would be in charge of the team for a while before Ralf Rangnick was brought in as the interim manager till the end of the season.

And while results have improved under the German coach, the performances have left a lot to be desired. Thus, Manchester United could have a mountain to climb if they are to finish in the top four this season unless things improve drastically.

One thing that Manchester United did a brilliant job at in the summer is keeping their best players while also adding big names to their ranks.

This could prove to be very difficult next time around though, as there are many players whose contracts are running out while others are just believed to be looking to leave in order to get more regular playing time. Things could take another turn in this regard if they don’t qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Of course, the situation is far from ideal for Manchester United, who could find themselves in the middle of another rebuild in the near future.
