Since Cristiano Ronaldo left Manchester United to join Real Madrid in 2009 in a then world record transfer move, there had been on-and-off rumours about a return to Old Trafford. He would go on to establish himself as one of the greatest in the history of the game during his time in Spain before sealing a surprise move to Juventus in 2018.
Ronaldo’s stay in Italy did not turn out as he would have hoped though. Many believed that he was the missing piece of the puzzle who would lead Juventus to the Champions League title. But instead, they appeared to take a step back both domestically and in Europe.
After three years in Turin, Ronaldo would make another surprise move, this time to return to the club where he had first made a name for himself, Manchester United.
The fans would welcome him back with open arms and there was a brilliant feeling around what was to come for Manchester United this season. Things have not gone their way since then though.
Manchester United struggle despite Ronaldo’s return

Manchester United had finished second in the Premier League and runners up in the Europa League in the previous campaign. And after signing not only Ronaldo, but also Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton in the summer, many believed that they were ready to challenge for major trophies this season.
Unfortunately for the Red Devils, things have not gone their way since then. The club stumbled out of the gates and currently find themselves in a race to finish in the top four.
It remains to be seen if they can get it done, with Manchester United currently sitting at fourth in the Premier League table, although Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have games in hand. Naturally, questions have been raised about Ronaldo’s future at the Theatre of Dreams.
