It was viewed as a great move on the part of Manchester United when they brought in Ralf Rangnick as the interim manager of the club till the end of the season. The legendary German coach had shaped the idea of Gegenpressing and also popularised zonal marking, and had an impact on the likes on Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann, just to name a few.

As a result, many believed that Rangnick was good enough to make such a turnaround with this Manchester United team that he would be made the permanent manager after a while.

That has not been the case till now and the performances under Rangnick have left a lot to be desired. But no one can deny that the results have improved from earlier on in the season.

At the end of the day, he was not dealt the best hand when arriving at Manchester United. Yet slowly but surely, things appear to be improving for the Red Devils.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had tried with two up front a few times during his last few weeks as the Manchester United manager and Rangnick himself tried to do the same in recent times.

It simply was not working though and the team did not look comfortable playing that system. What is a positive is the fact that Rangnick recognised that and has already made a change, moving back to just one focal point up top.

And Manchester United have instantly looked more comfortable playing in that system. Yes, they can and must improve further but things appear to be certainly moving in the right direction.
