Manchester United were expected to add to their midfield ranks in the past summer transfer window. But despite being linked with several players till the very last moment, the Red Devils did not end up making an addition in the middle of the park, and entered the new season with the options that they had the last time around. In hindsight, that appears to have been a mistake on the part of the club.
The futures of Paul Pogba, whose current deal runs out next summer, and Donny van de Beek, who has never managed to establish himself at Old Trafford, are pretty much up in the air. At 33 years of age, Nemanja Matic is no longer the player that he once was. And questions continue to be asked about their regular midfield pivot of Fred and Scott McTominay as well.
Thus, it would not be a surprise to see Manchester United make an addition there next summer, if not this month, and it looks like they have a Real Madrid star in their sights.
As reported by El Nacional, Manchester United had put a €60 million offer on the table for Federico Valverde but Real Madrid have rejected it and declared the Uruguayan midfielder not for transfer.
Manchester United’s offer for Valverde rejected by Real Madrid
The legendary trio of Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro have continued to dominate in the middle of the park for Real Madrid.
Thus, while he has been impressive in the past, Valverde has still not been able to establish himself as a regular in the starting XI at the Santiago Bernabeu.
But even then, it looks he is a major part of their plans for the future along with Eduardo Camavinga, another player that Manchester United had been linked with in the summer.
As a result, it looks like Manchester United will have to shift their eyes elsewhere when it comes to their midfield targets.
