Ousmane Dembele is a player that Manchester United have been linked with for years without a move to Old Trafford ever taking place. But soon, the Red Devils could have the chance to sign him on a free transfer as the Frenchman’s current deal with Barcelona is set to run out next summer. And while the La Liga giants are believed to be interested in handing him a contract extension, it is looking more unlikely with every passing day.

When Dembele arrived at Barcelona, as the long-term replacement for the departing Neymar, he was one of the most highly-rated young talents in world football and many believed would go on to become one of the best in the game in the future.

A series of injuries at Camp Nou have meant that Dembele’s development has stalled and while he has shown glimpses of his ability from time to time, he is nowhere near fulfilling his potential.

All the recent signs point towards him leaving Barcelona soon. As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, his agent told RMC Sport:

"“Barça are losing Dembélé on their own. They cannot use the threat that Dembélé will spend six months without playing if he does not renew now.“It’s a kind of pressure that doesn’t work against people like us and me.”"

Manchester United have received Dembele transfer boost

Thus, it pretty much looks like Dembele is headed out of Barcelona sooner or later, which is a boost to Manchester United’s chances of signing him.

There have been some recent rumours which have also suggested that Manchester United, as well as Newcastle United, have been offered the chance to sign Dembele for a transfer fee around €20 million this January. On the other hand, he could very well be available on a free transfer next summer.

Thus, it remains to be seen how things turn out in the Dembele transfer saga. While things can change very quickly in football, it must be said that at this moment, Barcelona’s chances of holding on to him are not looking too bright.
