Manchester United suffer huge Mauricio Pochettino blow

It had looked like Manchester United had found their long-term manager in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. While the Norwegian was not able to guide them to a trophy, the club had made undeniable progress under his management and came very close to silverware last season, finishing second in the Premier League and lost the Europa League final on penalties. Not too long ago, he had been handed a long-term contract extension as well.

Things went off the tracks for Manchester United at the start of this campaign though, despite the club signing superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane in the summer.

As a result, Solskjaer was shown the exit door after almost three years in charge of Manchester United and Ralf Rangnick was brought in as the interim manager till the end of the season, after which he will take a consultancy role.

Things have not improved a lot since the change though and as a result, the club are expected to make a long-term appointment in the summer. Mauricio Pochettino is someone that they have been linked with extensively but now, there appears to be a blow in the race for his signature as well.

As reported by The Telegraph (via Mirror), there is an unspecified major European club who are believed to have identified Pochettino as a managerial target as well. Thus, Manchester United could have some competition on their hands.

Pochettino is currently at Paris Saint-Germain but has not been able to get the best out of their incredible squad, consisting of players like Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar, till now.

As a result, rumours have suggested that he could be on his way out of the club next summer, with Zinedine Zidane believed to be his potential replacement. If that happens, it would of course open up an opportunity for Manchester United to make their move for Pochettino.
