Manchester United suffered their first defeat since the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the previous game against Wolves. It was an uninspiring performance from the Red Devils as well and things could have ended up much worse if not for the heroics of David de Gea in goal. They have had some time to reflect on that game though and will now take to the field against Aston Villa in the third round of the FA Cup.
Having not won a single trophy in more than four seasons, Manchester United must be eager to bring an end to that streak as soon as possible. They are already out of the League Cup though and sit at 7th in the Premier League. The Red Devils are in the last 16 of the Champions League but that is always very difficult to win. Thus, the FA Cup represents their best opportunity at silverware at the moment.
And in that regard, Ralf Rangnick has dropped an exciting hint as it looks like the Red Devils will field a strong team against Aston Villa.
As reported by Manchester United’s official website, the interim manager said:
"“We will try to play with the best possible team, with a strong team. There might be a few changes but I haven’t taken the final decisions yet myself but we will definitely try to play this game as if it was a normal Premier League or Champions League game.”"
Manchester United set to field strong team against Aston Villa
Manchester United look set to put out a strong team against Aston Villa. It might be because they also realise that this competition is their best chance at lifting some silverware this season.
On the other hand, things are looking up for Aston Villa. They have improved since the arrival of Steven Gerrard as manager. And they appear to be getting busy in the January transfer window as well. Thus, this will be a very interesting FA Cup tie.
Manchester United and Aston Villa are set to meet each other once again just a few days later though, that time in the Premier League.
