Manchester United have had their fair share of problems this season. The club had not won a single trophy in four seasons but hopes were high coming into this one. They had finished second in the Premier League last season and lost the Europa League final only on penalties. The Red Devils were able to keep the core of that squad together while also bringing in superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane over the summer.
Thus, many expected the Red Devils to finally mount a Premier League challenge for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement. It is safe to say things have not quite gone that way.
It looks like they could have a tough time even finishing in the top four this season and several players have failed to match their performances from the previous campaign. Mason Greenwood is one of them.
And as reported by The Guardian, Greenwood is now among those considered as expendable.
Manchester United have Greenwood problem on their hands
When Ralf Rangnick arrived, it was considered as a boost for Greenwood. The German coach had a reputation for developing youngsters.
Not too long ago, Greenwood was considered as one of the most important players at Manchester United and had managed to nail down a spot in their first-team as a teenager. It is easy to forget that he is still just 20 years of age and according to stats from Transfermarkt, he has already made 125 appearances for the club, scoring 34 goals and providing 12 assists.
One cannot ignore the fact though that he has appeared to fall down the pecking order this season. And it has not just been the case following Rangnick’s arrival. He was being left on the bench during Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s last weeks as manager as well.
Worryingly, rumours are already starting to emerge about a potential Manchester United exit. One can only hope that Greenwood is able to rediscover his best soon because he has the potential to go on to become one of the best players in the world one day.
