Manchester United will know the importance of their game against Wolves. With teams above them dropping points recently, the Red Devils have a chance to break into the top four once again if they can go on a good run of form. They find themselves short of options in defence going into the match though, in what is a major blow for Ralf Rangnick’s side.

Defence has been a worry for Manchester United for a long time now. They had brought in Raphael Varane in the summer and hopes were that he would have solidified their backline. But the French World Cup winner has struggled with injury problems.

Fortunately, he is back available now but a few of his centre-back partners might not be. As reported by The Athletic, Harry Maguire is out injured for the game against Wolves. Victor Lindelof is also still trying to recover from COVID-19. Even Eric Bailly had to be substituted off in the previous game with a problem of his own.

It is believed though that Bailly has a chance to play against Wolves while Phil Jones is also in contention to make his first Premier League appearance in a long time.

Could Jones make his Manchester United return against Wolves?

There have been suggestions that Jones has impressed Rangnick in training but it also must be pointed out that he last made an appearance for the Manchester United senior team back in the 2019/20 season.

Thus, the situation is far from ideal for the Red Devils as it looks like Rangnick has been left scrambling for options in the heart of defence. Nemanja Matic is also capable of playing there if the situation calls for it.

It remains to be seen how things turn out but it is safe to say that the line up against Wolves could be very interesting.
