Manchester United currently find themselves in the middle of a top four race following their disappointing start to the campaign. And they might need to strengthen their squad in January in order to give them the push that they need. One area that Ralf Rangnick could certainly do with more options in is midfield. The Red Devils were expected to strengthen there in the summer but did not end up doing so, which could have been a mistake in hindsight.
Paul Pogba’s future is up in the air at the moment and the same can be said about Donny van de Beek as well. Nemanja Matic is no longer in his prime at 33 years of age. And while both Fred and Scott McTominay have put in some encouraging performances recently, there are huge question marks over their consistency.
Borussia Monchengladbach’s Denis Zakaria appears to be someone who has caught Manchester United’s attention. But Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich appear to be in the transfer race as well.
I am told that Manchester United, Liverpool, Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich have all recently enquired about the possibility of signing Denis Zakaria in January

Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund in Zakaria race
It is safe to say that there is heavy competition for Zakaria’s signature, as the Swiss international has been a standout in the Bundesliga in recent seasons. And at 25 years of age, it might be the perfect time for him to take on a different challenge.
Interestingly, his current deal with Borussia Monchengladbach is set to run out at the end of the season and with no extension in sight, the German side might possibly be open to finding him a new club in January rather than seeing him walk out as a free agent just months later.
Considering the clubs interested in Zakaria, it would be a major coup on the part of Manchester United if they can sign him.
