There are a lot of players at Manchester United who have not gotten the playing time that they must have been looking for coming into the season. And as a result, they are naturally being linked with moves away from the club in the near future. One of the most surprising names on that list is that of Dean Henderson, who has fallen behind David de Gea in the pecking order once again.
Last season, it had looked like Henderson was destined to be the long-term goalkeeper for Manchester United. He had returned to Old Trafford after an impressive loan spell at Sheffield United and in the second half of last season, he had established himself as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s number one between the posts.
Things have changed this season though. De Gea looks back to his best and Henderson is firmly behind him in the pecking order once again.
Amidst all this, Manchester United have been linked with a future move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez as well. And Kevin Campbell believes that that could accelerate Henderson’s exit plans. As reported by Football Insider, the pundit said:
"“He’ll have been wanting away anyway, but that will certainly speed things up.“He came back from Sheffield United expecting games with a view to taking over that number one jersey from De Gea. It just hasn’t quite happened for him, and De Gea’s form this season won’t have helped.“A goalkeeper of his quality needs and deserves to be playing. I think he’s gonna be seeking pastures new very soon.”"
Henderson tipped to look for Manchester United exit after recent rumours
Henderson has already been linked with a move away from Manchester United this season, although, it does feel unlikely that the club will let him leave before bringing in a replacement.
On the other hand, De Gea is back to his sensational best right now and on current form, it does not feel like Henderson will break into the starting XI once again, anytime soon.
The rumours with Martinez, who has been one of Premier League’s best goalkeepers in recent times, has certainly added a further twist to this. It remains to be seen how things unfold but it could certainly get interesting.
