Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to Manchester United this summer was unexpected and welcomed with open arms by the fans. For a while, it had looked like the club legend was headed towards Manchester City, which would have been a huge blow. Instead, there was a twist, and the Portuguese superstar ended up sealing a return to the Theatre of Dreams.

The move was expected to turn Manchester United into immediate Premier League contenders, after they had finished second in the previous campaign. Unfortunately, that has not been the case.

Instead, the club have appeared to take a step back this season and find themselves in a race for the top four, which could get tight with Chelsea, West Ham United, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur all involved as well.

Thus, it is safe to say that Manchester United have not been able to meet the expectations this season and Ronaldo has admitted that he is not happy with the situation. While recapping his 2021, he wrote on Facebook:

"“And of course, my return to Old Trafford will always be one of the most iconic moments in my career.“But I’m not happy with what we are achieving in Man. United. None of us are happy, I’m sure of that. We know that we have to work harder, play better and deliver way more than we are delivering right now.”"

Ronaldo is not happy with the situation at Manchester United

For a player like Ronaldo, for whom success has been like second nature all these years, the situation at Manchester United must definitely be unfamiliar.

Even during his first stint at Old Trafford, the club had won one trophy after another. But things have changed quite a bit since then.

Manchester United have not won a single trophy for the past four seasons and will be hoping to bring an end to that streak this season.

Unless Manchester United are able to go on an incredible run from here on, it feels unlikely that they will be able to put up a title challenge this season. While never say never in football, a top four finish is what should be their primary target right now. And they could need Ronaldo to be at his best to deliver that as well.
