Manchester United have struggled ever since the retirement of Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013. Since then, they have never won the Premier League, a competition that they had dominated for so long and have not had a good time in Europe either. In fact, they have not won a single trophy in more than four seasons now, and have been inconsistent even when it comes to finishing top four in the league.

There were many hopes that this could be the season that they finally challenged for the Premier League title once again after signing superstars like Cristiano Ronaldo, Raphael Varane and Jadon Sancho in the summer but that looks very unlikely at the moment.

Instead, Manchester United’s target might be finishing in the top four after they have endured a difficult start to the campaign. And it is safe to that they might need to make quite a few changes to their team, if they are to challenge for the league any time in the near future.

One man who has received a lot of criticism this season is club captain, Harry Maguire. And as reported by Football Insider, former Celtic star, Frank McAvennie, said:

"“Premier League strikers must be so happy to see his name on the teamsheet, he’s a striker’s dream.“They should not have signed him and they should not have made him captain.”"

Maguire has struggled in the heart of Manchester United’s defence this season

It is safe to say that Maguire has not had the best season till now. He was very solid in the 2020/21 campaign for Manchester United and then for the England national team at EURO 2020. But he has struggled to rediscover that form this time around.

It is not just Maguire though. Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka are two more first-team regulars for Manchester United who have not been able to put in similar performances to last season.

One can only hope that the Manchester United captain is able to rediscover his best as soon as possible. Otherwise, the Red Devils might have to bring in another centre-back soon.
