Manchester United are just one of the many clubs interested in signing Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund. A release clause is believed to become active in his contract with the Bundesliga club next summer and it is expected to lead to a major transfer race for the Norwegian striker’s signature. And it is not hard to see why considering his performances in recent years, and signing him would be considered as a major coup for any club in world football.

Still just 21 years of age, Haaland is already one of the best players in the world. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has scored 76 goals and provided 27 assists in 79 appearances for Borussia Dortmund.

Extraordinary numbers for any player. And Manchester United could certainly do with someone like him, as they aim to return to the top of the Premier League.

It appears that they have been handed a major blow by their crosstown rivals though. As reported by Bild (via Sport Witness), Manchester City are ready to pay his release clause. Real Madrid are also interested.

Manchester United handed Haaland transfer blow

One has to admit that at this point of time, Manchester City looks like a more tempting destination than Manchester United.

Pep Guardiola’s side are leading the Premier League and they do not even have an in-form striker in their squad right now. Thus, one can only wonder what they could achieve if they had a player like Haaland.

On the other hand, Manchester United have not won a trophy in four seasons now and Ralf Rangnick will be hoping to bring that streak to an end after joining the club as the interim manager till the end of the campaign.

Of course, Real Madrid will always be an attractive destination for players, while clubs like Bayern Munich, Barcelona and a few others could be in the race as well. Thus, Manchester United have a mountain to climb if they want to sign Haaland.
