Manchester United have been linked with a lot of players in recent times regarding potential future transfer moves. One of them has been Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong. The Dutch midfielder is one of the most highly-rated players at Camp Nou right now and is believed to be a big part of their planned rebuild. But rumours have suggested that the Red Devils would be interested in bringing him to Old Trafford.

De Jong rose to prominence with his displays for Ajax during their run to the UEFA Champions League semi-finals a few seasons back and moved to Barcelona after that. The Spanish giants have not enjoyed a great time in recent years though and were even knocked out of the Champions League group stages this season. They will now play in the Europa League.

Naturally, it should not come as a surprise that De Jong’s name is not being mentioned amongst the top midfielders in the world right now but there is no question that he has the talent and potential to be in that conversation one day.

The Red Devils are believed to have an eye on his situation at Barcelona but De Jong’s father’s recent comments have handed them a transfer blow. As reported by AD, when asked about the rumours linking his son with a potential move to Manchester United or Bayern Munich, he said:

"“It’s often bad weather there. Of course it’s about football, but it does matter. Of course I know that Barcelona needs money and a great offer for Frenkie could help, but I don’t see it happening any time soon. Although, the five top European clubs have all called.”"

It is safe to say that pulling off any potential move for De Jong will be difficult for Manchester United and does not appear to be on the cards for the immediate future.

He could be a solid addition to Manchester United’s midfield though, an area that they have needed to strengthen in for quite some time.

Any future transfer moves at Manchester United could depend on the long-term manager that they appoint next summer though.
