Jesse Lingard was expected to have a big role at Manchester United this season after his tremendous half-a-season loan spell at West Ham United in the second half of the 2020/21 campaign. Unfortunately for the English international though, he has struggled for playing time this time around despite his impressive form. And as a result, many expect him to leave the club soon.

Lingard’s current deal with Manchester United will run out next summer. And in the current situation, it does feel like he is on his way out of the club.

As reported by Manchester Evening News, Manchester United are not expecting Lingard to leave in the January transfer window though. The club would prefer to obtain a transfer fee for his departure but the player is currently planning to see out the season at Old Trafford.

He is believed to be optimistic about getting more playing time under Ralf Rangnick. Discussions over a potential contract extension appear to have stalled though.

Lingard looks set to see out his Manchester United contract

It is hard not to feel that Lingard has deserved more chances than he has got this season. He was absolutely superb for West Ham United in the second half of last season.

According to stats from Transfermarkt, he scored 9 goals and provided 5 assists in 16 appearances for the Hammers. But since returning to Manchester United, he has played only 87 minutes of Premier League football over 8 appearances.

Thus, if Lingard does end up leaving the club anytime in the near future, it would be understandable and should not come as a surprise to anyone.

But Rangnick’s arrival as interim manager has provided a fresh start to many players at the club. And who knows how things could turn out for Lingard over the coming weeks and months. Never say never in football.
