Among other targets, signing a midfielder was believed to be on Manchester United’s wishlist last summer. Nemanja Matic is 33 years of age and no longer in his prime, while Paul Pogba’s future at the club is very much up in the air with his current deal running out next summer. This meant that the Red Devils had enough reasons to sign someone who could play in the defensive midfield position.

However, with the club bringing in players such as Raphael Varane, Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, they ultimately did not end up securing the services of a midfielder. In hindsight, that might have been a mistake.

The emergence of the Fred-Scott McTominay pivot was one of the major features of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s tenure as Manchester United manager. The duo have shown inconsistency in the middle of the park this season.

And considering all of this, it should not come as a surprise that Manchester United have their eyes set on a potential midfield signing in the future.

Manchester United have their eyes set on Aston Villa star

As reported by The Sun, Manchester United interim manager Ralf Rangnick is targeting a move for Aston Villa’s John McGinn to replace Pogba. The midfielder could end up costing a transfer fee around £50 million though.

The Scottish international has caught the eye with his influential performances for both club and country. And this is not the first time when McGinn has been linked with a potential move to Manchester United.

McGinn’s current contract with Aston Villa is believed to run until the summer of 2025, meaning they are under no pressure to let him leave anytime in the near future.

He is not the only midfielder Manchester United have been linked with recently though. They are rumoured to be tracking RB Leipzig’s Amadou Haidara as well. On the other hand, Kalvin Phillips and Declan Rice have been linked with the Red Devils for a long time.
