After a very disappointing start to the season, it looks like things are slowly but surely starting to look up for Manchester United. They got a huge 2-0 away win against Villarreal to seal their spot in the Champions League knockout phase last midweek and then grabbed a 1-1 draw against Chelsea away at Stamford Bridge. Both of them were very positive results for the club under caretaker manager Michael Carrick.

While Manchester United have already announced Ralf Rangnick as the interim manager till the end of the season, it might take a bit longer to see him in the Old Trafford dugout.

For the time being, Carrick will remain the caretaker manager and to be honest, he has done an impressive job till now.

There appears to be some good news for Manchester United on the injury front as well as Raphael Varane is already back on the grass. As reported by the club’s official website, Carrick said regarding the French defender:

"“Yeah, Rapha’s rehab is going really well.“He’s out on the grass but it won’t be any time this week, by any stretch, it’ll be a little bit further than that, if not even longer.“He’s on course [though], which is good.”"

Varane’s arrival in the summer was expected to solidify the Manchester United backline and turn them into one of the best defensive teams in the Premier League. It is safe to say that things have not gone that way till now.

As a whole, the defence has just not quite clicked till now. On the other hand, Varane has had his injury problems and spent significant time on the sidelines.

There is no question about the World Cup winner’s quality or ability though. One can only hope that he can remain fit moving forward and hopefully a run of games in the first-team will help him rediscover his top form.

There are other worries for Manchester United in the backline as well though. The likes of Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw have all struggled to match their performances from last season, this time around.
