It looks like Ralf Rangnick is set to become the Manchester United interim manager soon. And in that scenario, one has to wonder what the future might hold for Michael Carrick. The club’s performance under him as the caretaker manager, against Villarreal, was very impressive as they got a 2-0 away in the Champions League against a tough side. And it does feel like he will be in the dug out against Chelsea this weekend as well.

One of the biggest decisions that Manchester United made in midweek in the game against Villarreal was to give Donny van de Beek a start.

The Dutch midfielder arrived at the club in the summer of 2020 from Ajax and had a lot of expectations around him. He had already proven himself in the Champions League as well as domestic competition during his time in the Netherlands. But it is safe to say that things have not worked out for him since moving to Old Trafford.

It feels like Manchester United have future plans for Van de Beek though. As reported the Daily Mail, Carrick said:

"‘Donny’s one of those players because he’s so flexible, he can play different positions. He did the same for Ajax and Holland, and variety can be a real strength.‘We’ve got ideas where we think Donny’s most suited but he’s so flexible and adaptable, two or three positions, he even played false nine for Ajax when they ended up getting beaten by Tottenham.‘We’ve got ideas but being flexible is a strength.’"

Does Van de Beek have a future at Manchester United?

Van de Beek has barely featured for Manchester United in recent times and it has been mostly believed that he is headed for the Old Trafford exit door in the near future.

But could that end up changing with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer now having departed the managerial hot seat at Old Trafford and a change set to be made.

To be honest, Van de Beek has impressed in recent times. He underwent a physical transformation over the summer and looks more ready for English football now than he did last season. And it will be interesting to see how he does if he can get a good run of games in the first-team, although, it is safe to say that he has some tough competition for the starting spots.
