While nothing is official yet, Manchester United appear to be closing in on the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as the club’s interim manager till the end of the season, after which he will have a consultancy role for two years. It is safe to say that this is potentially one of the most interesting moves that the Red Devils have made in years and it remains to be seen how things ultimately turn out.

Rangnick is one of the most influential figures in the modern game. His philosophy of Gegenpressing has been used by many managers to great success in recent times and he had a hand in popularising zonal marking as well.

One of the managers who he has influenced is Jurgen Klopp, who has firmly established himself as one of the best in the world today, after guiding Liverpool to a Champions League and a Premier League title.

Naturally, there is a lot of interest surrounding what he has to say about Rangnick’s potential Old Trafford move. And as reported by the Independent, the Liverpool manager said:

"“It’s a bit tricky, we usually don’t talk until they are confirmed.“It’s obviously a really experienced manager, built famously two clubs [RB Leipzig and 1899 Hoffenheim] from nowhere to proper forces in Germany. The first concern is always a coach and that is what he is. United will be organised.“Unfortunately another good manager is coming to England, and to Man United. United will be organised on the pitch. That’s obviously not good news for other teams.”"

What could Manchester United look like with Rangnick as their manager?

It is safe to say that Rangnick’s style of football is quite different to how Manchester United have played in recent times, and thus, if the German does take the Old Trafford hot seat, it will be interesting to see which players he is going to prefer.

Rangnick’s style is based on intense pressing football, winning back the ball as quickly from the opposition as possible. There are several players who that system would fit. And several others who could end up struggling.

But considering that Rangnick is only expected to be the manager for around six months, his stint should not have a massive impact on the long-term futures of some players, with Manchester United looking set to bring in a permanent manager next summer, when more options are available.
