Manchester United put in a great performance away in Spain to come out with a 2-0 victory against Villarreal to seal their place in the Champions League knockout phase. Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho were enough for the Red Devils but there were many other players who impressed as well. It was a great start for caretaker manager, Michael Carrick, to say the least.

Manchester United are believed to be looking for an interim manager to guide the team until the end of the season but if they continue to perform like this with Carrick in the dug out, it is very possible that he might be handed the role.

One of the many players who impressed last night was Fred, who made his mark on both ends of the pitch.

And Michael Carrick has hailed Fred for his brilliant performance against Villarreal. As reported by Independent, the Manchester United caretaker manager said about the Brazilian midfielder:

"“Fred is one of the best at what we try to do. Cristiano finishes it off but Fred has done brilliantly.”"

Carrick has hailed the Manchester United midfielder after win vs Villarreal

Fred’s Manchester United career has been up and down to say the least. At times he has looked excellent, at others, he has not looked like a player who should be a regular in the Manchester United starting XI.

But performances like the one against Villarreal give us a glimpse of the incredible potential that he has. In fact, his performances for the Brazil national team have been superb for a while. He just has not been able to produce that in a Manchester United shirt on a consistent basis.

One would be hoping that this is a start of a good run of form for Fred. Because if the Red Devils are to turn their season around and get back in the title race, they will definitely need the Brazilian midfielder to be on top form moving forward.
