Michael Carrick guided Manchester United to a 2-0 win against Villarreal in his first game as the caretaker manager of the club in what must be a huge boost for the Red Devils. And while the club are expected to bring in an interim manager till the end of the season, it is very possible that the 40-year-old could end up getting the role, if the team continue to impress moving forward.
But as we all know, things can change very quickly in football. And if the right manager ended up becoming available, Manchester United could end up making a long-term appointment sooner than expected.
In that regard, the recent rumours surrounding Mauricio Pochettino are very interesting to say the least. There have been suggestions that he is ready to leave Paris Saint-Germain and join Manchester United in the middle of the season.
But Pochettino insists that he is happy in Paris. As reported by Manchester Evening News, the PSG manager said:
"“I think I was clear. I said to you all that my contract is until 2023. It is this season and one season more. I am really happy at Paris Saint-Germain. That is a fact. The fact is I am happy in Paris.”"
Pochettino breaks silence amid Manchester United links
Pochettino has been linked with Manchester United for years, as far back as when he was the Tottenham Hotspur manager. But a move has never materialised.
Right now, he finds himself at one of the biggest clubs in the world in the form of Paris Saint-Germain. After enjoying an incredible summer transfer window, the club were expected to dominate both French and European football this season but that has not been the case till now.
The trio of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar have not quite got it going either. And thus, questions have naturally been raised about the future of Pochettino as the club’s manager.
Interestingly, Zinedine Zidane, has been linked with the French giants in recent days as well. Thus, could there be an opportunity for Manchester United? Only time shall tell.
