Manchester United made a bright start to life after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with a 2-0 win over Villarreal away in Spain in the Champions League. Michael Carrick was in charge of the team as the caretaker manager following the Norwegian’s recent exit after their 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford at the weekend, which saw them slip down to eighth in the Premier League table.

Goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho were enough to hand them the win against Villarreal and secure their place in the Champions League last 16. And one has to wonder what will happen to the vacant interim managerial role if the club continue to perform like this with Carrick in charge.

It does look like they have already started their search for an interim manager. As reported by BBC, Manchester United have contacted former Barcelona manager Ernesto Valverde with regards to the role.

He is without a club at the moment and that has been the case since he left Barcelona back in 2020. Could he make a return to management by becoming the Manchester United interim manager?

Manchester United have contacted Valverde regarding interim role

Valverde’s time at Barcelona was up and down to say the least. And while it might not have been very highly rated back then, in hindsight, after seeing how things have turned out at Camp Nou since his departure, he does deserve a lot more credit than he got back then for the job he did.

Someone like Valverde can be a solid choice to be the club’s interim manager. He has top level experience and has managed some of the biggest players in world football over the years.

Now, Manchester United have been heavily linked with a potential move for Mauricio Pochettino recently as well, but a move for the Paris Saint-Germain manager will not be easy to pull off in a short period of time.
