Manchester United experienced a 4-1 defeat at the hands of Watford at the weekend. And what followed the loss was the departure of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club’s manager after almost a three-year long run in the role. And to be honest, it was not a surprise as the Norwegian had been walking the managerial tightrope at Old Trafford for a while now, and a change was perhaps needed.
Amid a hectic run of difficult fixtures, the game against Watford must have been considered by many as one in which the Red Devils could get all three points.
After their recent run of results, it was viewed as a must-win for Solskjaer and Manchester United. And win, they didn’t. In fact, they did not even come close and Watford could have actually scored more than the four goals that they did.
Harry Maguire received his marching orders on the day after being shown a red card and there was no coming back for Manchester United after that. Consequently, Saturday’s result brought an end to Solskjaer’s spell as the Manchester United manager.

Manchester United shelled out a transfer fee around £80 million to sign Maguire from Leicester City in the summer transfer window of 2019. And while always having his fair share of critics, he certainly received the backing of Solskjaer throughout.
He was awarded the captain’s armband for Manchester United and to be honest, he enjoyed a brilliant 2020/21 campaign and then a great EURO 2020 run with the England national team as well.
Unfortunately, things have not gone his way lately and he has not been able to replicate his form from the previous campaign, which has played a huge role in the club’s struggling defence this season. Hopefully, he can rediscover his best under the next manager.
