At the start of the season, there was a lot of positivity around Manchester United and for good reason. The club had finished second in the Premier League last season and had signed the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane over the summer transfer window. As a result, most fans expected the Red Devils to put up a title challenge this time around. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had also extended his contract with the club not too long ago.

It’s incredible how much can change within the span of a few months. At the moment, Manchester United find themselves sitting at seventh in the Premier League table and could slip down further before the end of the matchweek.

And when it comes to Solskjaer, it looked like he was already walking the managerial tightrope at Old Trafford, and it remains to be seen what effect the 4-1 defeat against Watford has on his future at the club.

David de Gea has claimed though that the players deserve the blame for their recent performances as well. As reported by Manchester Evening News, he told BBC Sport:

"“It’s not acceptable – the way we were playing and doing things. It’s easy to blame the manager or the staff but sometimes it’s the players. We need to show much more than we are doing.”"

This was a game that Manchester United fans would have been confident that the team could have gotten something out of, despite their bad run of form in recent times.

At the end of the day, going into the matchday, Watford were sitting at 17th. But it is safe to say that The Hornets got a convincing win on the day and to be honest, they could have scored more than the four goals that they did.

For Manchester United, it is clear that some changes are needed. The players, the manager, the staff, everybody needs to be doing better than they have till now this season. At the moment, it looks like they will struggle to make it into the top four if things don’t improve drastically soon.
