One of the biggest discussions surrounding Manchester United in recent weeks has been about the manager. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer finds himself in a sticky position right now. While the club have made undeniable progress since his appointment, their start to the 2021/22 campaign has been disappointing to say the least. The Red Devils were expected to be in the Premier League title race this time around but appear to be nowhere near that at the moment.
The club have decided to stick with the Norwegian manager for the time being. But, if things don’t improve soon, they might have no other choice but to make a change in the managerial hot seat.
Quite a few interesting names have been linked with the Manchester United job in recent times. Erik ten Hag is perhaps the most interesting of them all.
Ten Hag has done a tremendous job at Ajax over the years, and has them playing some tremendous football once again this season. And Rio Ferdinand appears to be a fan of the manager. While speaking on his YouTube channel and as reported by Metro, the Manchester United legend said:
"‘Now I don’t know Ten Hag personally but he’s doing a fantastic job at Ajax. Let’s remember that Ajax isn’t a small club.‘They’re a massive club, the biggest club in Holland. Yes, it’s different and the landscape is different but it’s still a huge club that he’s got to work with and the expectation levels there every day are to win.‘That’s something that will be there every day and would be there if he was to come to Manchester United.’"
Would Ten Hag be a good Manchester United manager?
Ten Hag first rose to prominence a few years back when he guided Ajax to an unlikely Champions League semi-finals spot, and they were moments away from reaching the final before conceding a late goal against Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg, which knocked them out of the competition.
It was a brilliant effort from the Dutch side though. And it was not only the results that caught the eye back then but their brilliant style of football as well.
Would someone like Ten Hag be a good manager for Manchester United? That is certainly an interesting question. At the end of the day, despite his brilliant spell at Ajax, he has never managed a big club outside of Netherlands. Thus, there will certainly be a bit of risk associated with any potential move for the Dutch mastermind.
