Despite finishing second in the Premier League last season, Manchester United conceded the highest number of goals among the top four. And in an attempt to take care of their problems at the back, the club signed Raphael Varane in the summer.
But the arrival of the four-time Champions League winner has not had the same effect as most fans would’ve expected. Varane himself has had his problems with injuries while on the other hand, the likes of Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire have struggled with form this time around, after great 2020/21 campaigns.
Despite this though, Phil Jones has not been able to make his way back into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s first-team plans till now and it looks like he could possibly be on his way out of Manchester United soon. If that does happen though, there does not appear to be any lack of interest in his signature.
As reported by The Sun, Jones is on the radar of as many as 13 clubs although Solskjaer will delay any decision until after the busy Festive run of fixtures, for fear of injuries. Watford and Newcastle United are believed to be keen on brining him in on loan as well as a number of clubs from the Championship. Wayne Rooney is a fan of the defender and would like to have him at Derby County.
Jones could leave Manchester United in the near future
Jones is the longest-serving player in the current Manchester United squad. Signed from Blackburn Rovers back in 2011 during the time of Sir Alex Ferguson as manager, he was expected to develop into one of the best defenders in world football back then.
It is safe to say things have not quite turned out that way. Jones has never reached the heights that were expected of him, although it must be said that injuries have played a big part in that.
It has been well over a year since Jones made his last appearance for Manchester United’s first-team and it remains to be seen when he will make his next one, if he does.
