The 5-0 result showed the gulf between Liverpool and Manchester United right now. But it looks like it is a player from the Red Devils that Jurgen Klopp wanted to bring to Anfield in the recent summer transfer window in order to strengthen his side further. The player in question is Edinson Cavani.
The Uruguayan star has struggled for regular playing time ever since the return of Cristiano Ronaldo to Old Trafford over the summer. But the recent switch to three at the back and two up front has provided some hope that Cavani could feature more regularly moving forward.
Even then, after the second half to the 2020/21 campaign that Cavani had, one cannot help but feel that he can make a huge contribution to this Manchester United side and should be playing much more than he has this season till now.
It appears that Cavani caught the eye of Klopp with his performances for Manchester United. As reported by El Nacional, the Liverpool manager was trying all summer to sign him but the Red Devils were reluctant to let the Uruguayan join their rivals and as a result, a move did not happen.
Klopp wanted to bring the Manchester United superstar to Liverpool
It remains to be seen what the future holds for Cavani but till now, he has most probably not played the amount of football that he would have wanted this season.
But there is some hope that Cavani and Ronaldo could form a partnership up top in the near future. They did brilliantly together in the game against Tottenham Hotspur, in what was a dominant 3-0 win for Manchester United. And if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sticks with his new system, that might be the way to go from here on.
Manchester United find themselves in a difficult spot right now and will be hoping to turn their season around after the international break.
