Manchester United have one of the best forward lines in all of Europe right now. Cristiano Ronaldo has come in and been absolutely brilliant in recent weeks but the depth beyond the Portuguese legend is incredible as well. They have players like Edinson Cavani, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood all capable of playing at striker.
Cavani’s time at Manchester United has been very interesting. He arrived in the summer of 2020 as a free agent but did not enjoy a great start to life at Old Trafford.
In fact, his first half to the 2020/21 campaign was one to forget and at one point of time, he was heavily linked with a move to Boca Juniors after struggling for playing time. And it looks like there was serious consideration on the part of Cavani on leaving the club.
As reported by the Mirror, Boca Juniors chief Juan Roman Riquelme told TNT Sports:
"“In January, Cavani called me saying that he wanted to come because he was playing little there.“I’ve been speaking with him for a long time and he called me in January to come because he wasn’t playing there. I remember we talked one day and the next day he came in and scored two goals in the last minutes.“He made a comeback. From then on he started scoring goals in all the games and they renewed with him.”"
Cavani ended up staying at Manchester United and finding his form
It is safe to say that it was very fortunate for Manchester United that the move did not happen as we all know how the season would eventually turn out.
Cavani came into his own in the second half of the season and at one point of time was looking like one of the best strikers in world football once again, finding the back of the net consistently and had a huge hand in Manchester United finishing second in the Premier League and reaching the Europa League final, which they lost against Villarreal.
Since the return of Ronaldo in the summer, he has found playing time hard to come by once again. But recently, a few promising performances have meant that the Uruguayan could be back in Solskjaer’s first-team plans, especially if they keep playing the new system with three at the back and two up front.
