Despite their disappointing start to the season, it is safe to say that Manchester United have one of the best squads in world football right now. They have world-class options all over the pitch. But if there is one position that they appear to be a bit light, it is defensive midfield. Nemanja Matic looks like the most natural in that role but beyond him, there are very few options.
Manchester United were expected to strengthen in that area over the summer but ultimately did not end up making an addition. They will have to do so sooner or later though.
One player that they have been heavily linked with for quite a while is Declan Rice. And the West Ham United star’s recent performances have shown why that is the case.
He is believed to be rated at around £100 million although it would be interesting to see what kind of a transfer fee he would command in case a move happens next summer. One thing is for sure though, Manchester United must try to make it happen.
Manchester United must try to sign Rice next summer
At 22 years of age, Rice has already established himself as a regular in the England national team and has been one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League for a while now.
And what is more, he has recently appeared to take his game to the next level. He has appeared to add some goals to his game now as well and has been one of the biggest reasons behind West Ham United’s incredible start to the season as they sit at fourth in the Premier League table at the moment.
Someone like Rice could be the key for Manchester United to unlock the next level. But there is expected to be a lot of competition for his signature with Chelsea and Manchester City also believed to be interested.
