Going into the game, Liverpool were very much the favourites against Manchester United. Jurgen Klopp’s side have made a flying start to this campaign while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side have struggled in recent weeks. But even then, very few could have predicted what was set to take place at Old Trafford.
Liverpool handed Manchester United a historic 5-0 defeat. And to be honest, it could have been worse for the Red Devils but they managed to hang on with 10 men without conceding a goal for the last 30 minutes of the game.
Of course, that was little consolation, and coming out of the game, questions were raised about the manager as well as many of the players in this current Manchester United team.
Solskjaer will remain as the manager for the time being though and has been given some time to turn things around. And it is not hard to see why the club might be reluctant to make a change. What is most important now is how this team reacts to the defeat. As reported by Manchester United’s official website, Harry Maguire said:
"“It’s been a tough week obviously, you can’t just brush these things aside, especially when you lose to your rivals. To lose in the manner that we did was so disappointing.“We’ve obviously had big discussions, we’ve analysed the game and the goals and looked at how we can do better and improve.“That’s the most important thing now, we need to come together as a group and a club. We know our fans will be with us and come Saturday at Tottenham, like I said, they will be there in their numbers and I’m sure they’ll be singing and chanting and be right with us and getting behind us.”"
Manchester United need to bounce back from the defeat against Liverpool and quickly
It is safe to say that this team needs to bounce back from the disappointment of the weekend as soon as possible. They have shown in the past that they can do that.
Of course, the upcoming run of fixtures will not help matters for them. The club will face Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta and Manchester City over their next three games.
These were always expected to be tough fixtures. And the circumstances will only make them tougher.
It is safe to say that Solskjaer’s side face a difficult road ahead. And if they are to bring their season back on track, they need to react quickly. Otherwise, expect to see changes take place at Old Trafford soon.
