It is safe to say that Manchester United find themselves in a very difficult spot right now after the 5-0 defeat against Liverpool in the Premier League. It is a result that the club’s fans will not forget in a long time and for all the wrong reasons. Naturally, questions have been raised regarding the future of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the club after the match.
Coming into the season, most fans would have expected Manchester United to compete for the Premier League title. They had finished second in the competition last season and had added Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton to their squad over the summer.
Things could not have turned out any differently till now though. The Red Devils sit at seventh in the Premier League table, are out of the League Cup and while they sit at the top of their Champions League group, away games against Atalanta and Villarreal await.
Amidst all this, when asked if he is still the right man to take Manchester United forward, Solskjaer told Sky Sports (via GOAL):
"“I have come too far, we have come too far as a group. We are too close to give up now. It is going to be a difficult one.“The players will be low but there’s loads of characters there. We know we are rock bottom, we can’t feel any worse than this. Let’s see where we take it.”"
Solskjaer’s Manchester United future is up in the air right now
There had been suggestions previously that the club still believe that Solskjaer is the right man for the Manchester United job and will continue to back him. And following the win over Atalanta in midweek, some of the pressure must have definitely been lifted off his shoulders.
It is safe to say that after the 5-0 defeat against Liverpool, the pressure is well and truly back on, and perhaps greater than ever before.
Now, it will be about how this team bounces back from this defeat. We have seen in the past that they are capable of doing so, whether it was after the 6-1 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur or after their elimination from the UEFA Champions League group stage last season. Fans will be hoping for something similar this time around as well.
