Manchester United have made a disappointing start to their 2021/22 campaign. Coming into the season, there were expectations that they would be competing with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League title race after enjoying a brilliant transfer window, when they managed to sign Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton.

It is safe to say that things have not quite gone as most people would have expected. At the moment, Manchester United find themselves sitting at sixth in the Premier League table, out of the League Cup and third in their Champions League group.

As a result, questions have been raised about the future of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the club’s manager.

For the time being, rumours have suggested that the club are very much behind the Norwegian manager and will continue to back him. But if things don’t improve in the future, they might have no other choice but to make a change. And it appears that they might be sounding out some options already.

Manchester United made a call to Zinedine Zidane during the international break

As reported by the Express, journalist Eduardo Inda told El Chiringuito TV:

"“I already said that PSG had approached him, they have always wanted him.“Newcastle also wanted him, but in the national team break, he had a call from Manchester United to replace Solskjaer.”"

If Manchester United have indeed reached out to Zidane, then it is definitely huge news. While it has been believed that they are going to stick with Solskjaer for now, it would mean that they have other managerial options in their sights as well in case things don’t work out.

Zidane is one of the greatest players in the history of the game and enjoyed a brilliant time at Real Madrid as a manager as well, although his second stint with the club was not nearly as impressive as his first stint when the team won three straight Champions League titles. Thus, if he does end up becoming the Manchester United manager one day, it would be considered as a major coup for the Red Devils.
