It is safe to say that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s time at Manchester United as the club’s manager has been mixed till now. On one hand, it is true that he has brought some stability to the club and guided them to a top four finish in consecutive seasons. But on the other hand, they are yet to win a trophy under his management.
It must be said that the club certainly backed him in the summer transfer window, signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton. And coming into the season there were high expectations that the Red Devils would compete with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
The start to the season has been disappointing to say the least. Manchester United currently find themselves sitting at sixth.
And as reported by Manchester Evening News, Solskjaer wanted the club to recruit a midfielder in the summer and is privately unhappy that Manchester United failed to sign one, because of a combination of factors.
Manchester United did not sign a midfielder in the summer
Midfield has certainly appeared to be an area of weakness for Manchester United in recent times and expectations were that they would bolster their options there over the summer.
Even though they made impressive additions elsewhere, they failed to strengthen in midfield. And that certainly appears to have had an effect on their performances.
The balance in the middle of the park just does not seem to be quite there and they could certainly do with a defensive midfielder who would sit in front of their backline. While Nemanja Matic can play in that role, he is 33 years of age, no longer in his prime as a footballer and not a long-term solution.
It remains to be seen when the club do decide to bring in a midfielder but it must be said that they must do it as soon as possible.
