Manchester United suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of Leicester City at the King Power Stadium this weekend. And thanks to that result, the Red Devils have slipped down to sixth in the Premier League table.
The defeat against Leicester City was Manchester United’s second of the 2021/22 Premier League season. Furthermore, they have not won in their past three league games. The defeat against The Foxes also brought an end to their incredibly long unbeaten run away from home.
The Red Devils have 14 points after the first 8 Premier League games of the season, already creating a five-point difference between themselves and current table toppers Chelsea. This is not what was expected coming into the campaign though.
After Manchester United signed Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane, Cristiano Ronaldo and Tom Heaton over the summer transfer window, fans would’ve hoped for a serious title challenge this time around. After a bright start though, they have faded away in recent weeks and their current form is a massive worry. Also, questions have been raised about the future of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Manchester United star defends Solskjaer despite recent run of results
Nemanja Matic has come to the defence of Solskjaer. As reported by Tribal Football, he told TV2:
"“He is a great manager and person.“We trust him and what he does. We need to see what we can do in the future. We players have to do our job, be focused in every single training session, in every single game.“Then we’ll see.”"
While the recent run of results have been disappointing to say the least, one has to admit that since Solskjaer became the manager of Manchester United, the club have enjoyed a lot of progress.
Following Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement, the club had bounced around the Premier League table for a while. But Solskjaer has brought some stability back at Old Trafford and in his two full seasons as the manager, Manchester United finished third and second in the Premier League respectively and only lost the Europa League final on penalties last season.
While the Norwegian manager’s future might be up in the air at the moment, it does look like the club will stick with him for the time being and give him every chance to turn this season around.
