When Manchester United signed Raphael Varane this summer, it was believed that it would solve their worries at the back for years to come. At 28 years of age, the French World Cup winner is in the prime of his career. On the other hand, they have Harry Maguire, who is the same age and enjoyed a brilliant 2020/21 campaign with both the Red Devils and the England national team.
Thus, many felt that a partnership of Varane and Maguire in the heart of defence could be one of the best in world football. It is safe to say that things have not gone as smoothly till now.
While Varane has done well individually, the defence as an unit has not clicked till now. Also, Maguire’s recent performances have raised questions about his future once again. And it looks like Manchester United have another high profile defender in their sights already.
As reported by El Nacional, Manchester United has decided to push hard for Jules Kounde. It is believed that Sevilla will only let him leave for his €90 million release clause though.
Manchester United are pushing hard for Kounde
Kounde is one of the most highly-rated young defenders in all of Europe right now and it is not hard to see why Manchester United would be interested in him.
It had appeared that he was on the verge of a move to Chelsea earlier this summer but that failed to materialise. And as a result, the race for the Frenchman’s signature is open once again.
It remains to be seen whether Chelsea will try to sign him in the future again. Another club who have been linked with Kounde in recent times is Real Madrid. And thus, it goes without saying that if Manchester United are able to sign him, it would be considered as a major coup for the club.
