As a result, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side were expected to compete with Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea in the title race this season.

Unfortunately, the club’s recent results have not been great though. Over the last six games, they have only won twice. Thus, the Red Devils have slipped from first to fourth in the Premier League, have already been knocked out of the League Cup and find themselves in a tricky spot in the Champions League.

As a result, questions are already being raised about the future of Solskjaer at Manchester United. He is yet to guide them to a trophy during his time as the club’s manager.

It is easy to forget that at the turn of the year, they were pretty much in a title race with Manchester City before falling behind over the coming months. And some claims have emerged about the aftermath of their defeat at the hands of Sheffield United last season.

As reported by The Athletic (via Metro), the Manchester United players were shocked by Solskjaer’s non-reaction to the defeat at the hands of Sheffield United. The manager felt a defeat of that kind was inevitable after their long unbeaten run.

That game proved to be kind of a turning point in their season though. Their title charge would be derailed over the coming weeks as Manchester United struggled for results.

By the end of the season, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City won the Premier League title by a comfortable margin of points while Manchester United did manage to finish second. On the other hand, Sheffield United were relegated.
