In many ways, this was a summer of change for Manchester United. While players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton arrived at Old Trafford, there were many who departed on loan in order to gain experience and develop or on a permanent basis.

One man who left Manchester United after spending six years at the club was Sergio Romero. The Argentine goalkeeper had been a part of the club’s first-team picture for a long time but had found opportunities hard to come by after Dean Henderson returned from his very successful loan spell with Sheffield United.

As a result, it was not much of a surprise that Romero departed Old Trafford when his contract with Manchester United came to an end. What was a bit of a surprise though is that he was not signed by a club through the course of the summer.

It does not look like he will remain a free agent for much longer though. As tweeted out by Fabrizio Romano, Romero had his medical with Venezia yesterday and is expected to sign with the Serie A club:

Not too long ago, it had looked like Romero had a genuine chance of establishing himself in Manchester United’s starting XI when David de Gea was going through a rough patch of form a couple of seasons back.

Since then though, things have not gone his way and after the return of Henderson, he did not make a single appearance for the Red Devils through the course of the 2020/21 season.

The Argentine is still a good goalkeeper though and at 34 years of age, he should have quite a bit of football left in the tank. It will be interesting to see how he does at Venezia, who could face a relegation battle this season in the Serie A.
