Manchester United have a brilliant core of English players, a number of whom are regular features in the England national team right now or are expected to be in the upcoming future. The names of Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Luke Shaw, Mason Greenwood, Jesse Lingard and Dean Henderson come to mind immediately. And another name that has been added to that mix over the summer is that of Jadon Sancho.
The club had been linked with Sancho for years and had even tried to sign him in the summer of 2020 but could not get a deal done. It was a different story this time around though.
Sancho arrived at Manchester United after a sensational spell at Borussia Dortmund which had seen him become one of the most effective wingers in world football. His start to life at the Theatre of Dreams has not gone as expected though as he is yet to either score or assist for his new club.
England national team manager, Gareth Southgate, seems convinced though that Sancho will show his qualities for Manchester United eventually. As reported by Manchester Evening News, he said:
"“We shouldn’t be surprised that for a young player to have such a big change in his life, new league, new club, different style of play, different training regime, back living in Manchester, moving house and everything that’s involved in that, that’s a lot to take in.“So it’s going to need time but he showed a lot of the qualities that he has [against Andorra] and I know that will come with the club as well.”"
Sancho has not had a great start to his Manchester United career
There is no doubt about Sancho’s qualities or potential, and most fans believe that eventually, he will come good for Manchester United.
But with Rashford closing in on a return from injury and Greenwood doing great on the right wing, Sancho could soon find himself on the bench if his performances do not improve.
Some of his recent displays have been cause for optimism though. While he has not made a goal contribution yet, it does look like he is slowly settling into his new surroundings. He assisted a couple of goals in England’s recent 5-0 win over Andorra and hopefully will use that performance as a launching pad.
