It is safe to say that things have not gone Edinson Cavani’s way this season as he has found opportunities hard to come by at Manchester United following Cristiano Ronaldo’s arrival in the summer. It must be pointed out that he has had fitness problems as well this season, which have not helped matters.
Cavani was absolutely brilliant last season. He had a slow start at Old Trafford after arriving in the summer of 2020 but came into his own in the second half of the campaign, and was looking like one of the best strikers in the world at one point of time, even at the age of 34.
Opportunities are expected to be limited this season though following the return of Ronaldo to Manchester United. As a result, Cavani could very well be the second choice striker in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team right now.
And as he struggles for chances at Manchester United, he has been handed a blow while with the national team as well. As reported by UOL (via Mirror), Cavani trained with the reserves ahead of Uruguay’s game against Colombia and is expected to be on the bench.
Will Cavani get enough chances at Manchester United this season?
It is safe to say that Manchester United fans probably expected Cavani to be the club’s main striker heading into this campaign before they ended up signing Ronaldo towards the end of the summer transfer window.
And it will be interesting to see how often he gets playing time this season. It must be said though that based on his recent performances for the club, he deserves to play a significant amount of football this season.
It remains to be seen how the season turns out for the Uruguayan striker but there is no doubt that he is still a brilliant player. Some rumours have even linked him with a January exit considering the current situation.
