Manchester United have one of the strongest squads in world football at the moment. But, it is safe to say that they need to make a few changes moving forward. Their start to the season has been underwhelming to say the least. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are already out of the League Cup and behind Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

Over the last six games, Manchester United have just won twice and will be hoping to turn things around after the international break. At times, it has appeared that they have taken a step back from the previous season, when they finished second in the Premier League and as runners up in the Europa League.

If there is one area in this Manchester United squad that is a bit light on options, it is their defensive midfield. But it looks like the club could be looking to transform Scott McTominay into a defensive midfielder.

As reported by The Athletic (via Metro), Manchester United have been working with McTominay to iron out some weaknesses in his game so that he can play as a sole defensive midfielder.

Could Manchester United star play in a different position?

For most of his time as the manager of the club, Solskjaer has preferred to play a double pivot in midfield. And while there were some rumours at the start of the campaign that he could try to change his system this time around, till now, he has stuck with the midfield duo of Fred and McTominay for the most part.

Most fans would have expected Manchester United to go for a defensive midfielder in the recent summer transfer window but that didn’t end up being the case.

Now it remains to be seen if the club are able to convert McTominay into one. If they can, it might allow both Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to play in attacking midfield roles together.
