Manchester United showed great ambition in the recent summer transfer window. The signings of Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Cristiano Ronaldo reflect how much the club believe in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to be the right man to guide them to silverware.
The forward department of the Red Devils is currently one of the best in the world. The competition for places is so tough that even the likes of Anthony Martial, Jesse Lingard and Edinson Cavani have struggled for regular minutes this season. And it could only get tougher, with Marcus Rashford closing in on a return from injury.
But, Manchester United are still being linked with new strikers. Rumours have emerged that the Red Devils have an eye on Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, who scored a brace in Benfica’s brilliant 3-0 win over FC Barcelona in the Champions League recently.
As reported by the Daily Star, Manchester City believe that they hold an edge in the race for Nunez. Pep Guardiola’s side enjoy a superb relationship with Benfica in the transfer market.
Manchester City appear to be ahead of Manchester United in Nunez transfer race
Other than the two Manchester clubs, Liverpool, Chelsea and Bayern Munich are also believed to be interested in making a move for the Benfica star.
According to stats from Transfermarkt, Nunez has scored 6 goals in 8 appearances for Benfica this season. The 22-year-old has also already made multiple appearances for the Uruguay national team.
It is not hard to see why both Manchester United and Manchester City might be interested in a move for Nunez in the future.
In the case of Manchester United, Cavani is expected to leave the club at the end of this season with his contract coming to an end. While on the other hand, Manchester City have been searching for a new striker for a while now.
