Manchester United’s recent form has raised questions regarding the future of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Old Trafford. While the team has shown a lot of progress during his time at the club, the Norwegian manager has not been able to guide them to silverware till now. And after signing Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho, Raphael Varane and Tom Heaton this summer, the manager will be under pressure to bring an end to that streak.

Interestingly, Solskjaer was handed a long-term contract extension before the start of this campaign. And now, the club have handed a new deal to his assistant manager, Mike Phelan as well.

As reported by Manchester United’s official website, Phelan has agreed a fresh deal which will keep him at Old Trafford until June 2024.

Phelan played several years for Manchester United and was then a part of Sir Alex Ferguson’s coaching team as well. He would leave and try his hand in management, before returning as a first-team coach when Solskjaer was appointed the caretaker manager of the club. He became the assistant manager when the Norwegian became the manager later on.

Manchester United need to start winning trophies again

It is clear that the club are backing Solskjaer and his team. But they will need to start delivering trophies soon.

Solskjaer has done a brilliant job when it comes to stabilising things at Old Trafford. After Ferguson’s retirement, Manchester United had bounced around the Premier League table for years.

But in Solskjaer’s two full seasons at the club, they have finished third and second, respectively. Now though, they will have to take the next step and start winning things again.

Not too long ago, winning trophies was almost second nature to Manchester United, but they have not won silverware in the past four seasons. Hopefully, they will be able to end that streak this time around. Otherwise, Solskjaer’s future at the club could be in some serious doubt.
