Bruno Fernandes reveals new Manchester United penalty rule
Manchester United’s start to the season has been mixed to say the least. While there have been some good results and big moments, there have also been quite a few disappointing ones. One big bright spot this season has been the return of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Coming in, many would have wondered how Ronaldo would do in the Premier League at the age of 36, having been gone for over a decade. He has started like he never left, already proving that he can still decide games even though he is no longer in his prime as a footballer. The game against Villarreal was a brilliant example of that.
Ronaldo had one of his quietest nights in a Manchester United shirt before managing to find the back of the net in stoppage time to seal a 2-1 victory for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side and breath new life into the Red Devils’ Champions League campaign.
His arrival has given the manager a big decision to make though and that is regarding penalties. Bruno Fernandes’ recent comments do appear to suggest that the decision regarding the penalty taker will be made by Solskjaer before every match. While speaking to CBS Sports and as reported by GOAL, he said:
"“I was on penalties tonight but we didn’t get one.“The manager will decide before the game who takes it.”"
Manchester United have two great penalty takers in Fernandes and Ronaldo
It is safe to say that both Fernandes and Ronaldo are more than capable when it comes to taking spot kicks. In fact, they might be two of the best in world football right now.
Against Aston Villa, it was Fernandes who took the penalty in stoppage time and sent it flying over the crossbar. And this raised questions about whether Ronaldo should be the one taking them moving forward.
But it does look like it might depend on each game, with Solskjaer deciding beforehand. What is a bigger worry right now though are the performances that the Red Devils have put in recently. If they are to challenge for titles this season, they need to improve.
