In classic Manchester United fashion, they left it as late as possible to get the win against Villarreal in the UEFA Champions League. It was Cristiano Ronaldo who scored deep into stoppage time to hand an important win to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side, who could have easily tasted a third straight defeat on the night as Villarreal were the much better team on this occasion.

While Alex Telles and Ronaldo might have got the goals for the Red Devils, they have only one man to thank for this win. And that man is David de Gea.

The Spaniard appeared to be back to his very best against Villarreal and kept Manchester United in the game almost single handedly at times. Without him, it would not have been possible for Ronaldo, who had one of his quietest nights in a Manchester United shirt for the majority of the game, to turn up with the winner at the end.

It was not a great performance from Manchester United to say the least and they definitely need to improve there. But, in the end, they will be happy with the win and the important three points. It could have so easily been none.

De Gea put in a spectacular performance in Manchester United win

For a few seasons now, de Gea had not looked anywhere near his best as mistakes had crept into his game. This time around, things appear to be different though.

Once again, he is making saves that no one would expect him to make and keeping Manchester United in games almost on his own at times. Tonight’s performance from the goalkeeper was absolutely brilliant.

And while Ronaldo will take most of the headlines due to scoring a stoppage time winner, as he should, it is de Gea who was the hero of the match for Manchester United on this occasion.
